Much more than a typical unit study, this guide, art materials, and recommended resource books combine to make a perfect introduction to art history/appreciation. Another well-conceived plan by Jennifer Steward (see Unit Studies section), studying art couldn't be easier. She takes us down a chronological path, using Start Exploring Masterpieces, the Usborne Story of Painting and reading aloud I, Juan de Pareja along with the study. Although most of the artwork to be studied is included in the resource volumes, you may need to locate some of them in other books. Besides studying art, several art projects are included in the plans. A list of materials you'll need is provided at the beginning of the study. Each student constructs an art history notebook as part of the study, using timeline cut-outs and labels supplied. Many reproducible form pages to use during the study are also included, along with informational text, quizzes, and instructions for accompanying art activities. If you've been hanging back because you weren't sure how to navigate your way through art history, this course will be your compass.
